On Wednesday, May 24, 2006 COFAR  presented a seminar entitled "Advocating for your Loved Ones" conducted by Collen Lutkewitch and Tom Frain at the Boston Higashi School.  The focus was the Massachusetts Department of Retardation (DMR) and understanding it's system inticracies.    High Points:  1.) You are an advocate for life  your loved one will probably need an advocate for life     2.) Become familiar with,  DMR regulations, your case worker and your rights      3.) Keep a "paper trail" (notes, emails, etc.) of your dealings with DMR   (emails are great for this)    5.) "Retarded" is just a word   None of us enjoys using this word- but, realize you are dealing with the Department of Retardation      6.) Explore their website:  http://www.cofar-mass.org to view their heroic work for the challenged in Massachusetts
